Movie Review - Snow White and the Huntsman

Finally got a chance to see this last night and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The movie had a lot more gut than I expected, the cinematography was spot on, as were the action scenes (bravo Rupert Sanders), the acting was lovely on all parts though I wish Kristen Stewart would learn to monitor her heavy breathing (I get it, you’re overwhelmed)…& finally the script…now here’s where it gets tricky.

I don’t know if it’s the fault of the screenwriter, producer, editor, director…it doesn’t matter - SOMEONE screwed the pooch on this one. And by that I really mean the producer. I always blame the people at the top because the man with the money has final say no matter how many political games he must play throughout the production (before, during, & prior). That said here’s what went wrong:

- the story line didn’t go deep enough…I felt like they were afraid to commit to making it a smidgin darker, which would have made it a killing.

- the fight scene at the end with Theron & Stewart - weak. Really? You’re going to drag this entire movie along, finally get to the part where you’re going to make them show us what they’ve got and it’s over in less than 5 min.

- your PR was completely misleading. I know that in some respect that’s the point but if you’re going to give the impression that Snow White is this badass that’s going to save the day maybe you should have referred back to Milla Jovovich’s portrayal in Joan of Arc to know what badass is really like.

- love story: it’s cliche (so what), but I would have liked to think she at least gets it on for real with one of them and not just staring at them from a distance. You did decide to call it Snow White and the Huntsman after all! You missed out on including some real meat in the story by taking out that element of the traditional story line. 

Ending on a positive: I appreciated and loved the female empowerment stuff you threw in. Women not always being the victim, giving an insiders view why they look crazy to the outside and how they come to do the things they do. You didn’t emasculate men and you didn’t make the women look like raving bitches. Thanks for that.
